What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Our Beliefs

The following are the beliefs of South Union Baptist Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

God

We believe in the one God, who is self-existent, eternal, and infinite. We believe that He, while being the same in essence, has revealed Himself as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe.

Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; Exodus 20:2-3; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 8:6;
2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2

Jesus

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, born of a virgin, sinless in His life, who atoned for the sins of the world by His death on the cross. We believe in His bodily resurrection, His ascension into heaven, His High Priestly intercession for His people and His return to the world according to His promise.

John 1:1-2;14; Luke 1:27-31; Hebrews 4:14,15; Isaiah 53:4-6; Luke 24:36-39; 1 John 2:1

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need of Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right.
As Christians, we seek to live under His control every day.

2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; 14: 16, 17, 26; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 6: 19, 20; Ephesians 1:13; 5:18; Galatians 5:25

Salvation

We believe that salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

Man

We believe that mankind is made in the image of God, to be like Him in character. Man is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates man from God.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s infallible Word, written by men who were divinely and uniquely inspired, and that it is our supreme authority in all matters of faith and practice.

2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Psalm 119:105, 160

Eternal Security

We believe that because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. The grace and power of God maintains salvation, not the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives this security.

John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10-14; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Romans 8:38-39

Eternity

We believe that man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God, through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are places of eternal existence.

John 3:16; 1 John 2:25; 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15

Creation

We believe the Genesis account of creation as being neither allegory nor myth, but a literal, historical account of the direct, immediate creative acts of God without any evolutionary process. Man (spirit, soul, and body) was created by a direct work of God and not from previously existing forms of life. All men are descended from the historical Adam and Eve, the first parents of the entire human race.

Genesis 1 & 2; Colossians 1:16-17; John 1:3

The Church

We believe that the church is a local, visible, body of called out baptized believers covenanted together for the purpose of carrying out the Great Commission. The church is the manifestation of the body of Christ. It is to observe Christ’s ordinances – baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper. The officers of the church are pastors and deacons, whose qualifications, claims, and responsibilities are clearly defined in the scriptures.

Ephesians 3:1-6; Acts 2:41-42; 1 Timothy 3:1-6; Matthew 28:18-20

Satan

We believe Satan is a fallen angel, the archenemy of God and man, the unholy god of this world, and that his destiny is the eternal lake of fire.

Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19; Matthew 25:41; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 6:10-17; Revelation 20:10

Love

We believe that love one for another as Jesus loves the believer manifests our discipleship, proves our love for God and symbolizes our authority as a New Testament Church. Love is the great commandment.

Matthew 22:35-40; John 13:34, 35; 1 John 4:7-21; 1 John 5:1-3
