BECOMING A MEMBER

The Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation. There is no such thing as a "Lone Ranger" Christian. As followers of Christ we are to live our lives in the context of connected, authentic relationships. The Christian life is designed to be done TOGETHER. We are to connect in fellowship, community, and life. Being a follower of Christ is more than just believing; it's belonging.

What are the benefits of connecting with other believers in the local church?

1. It identifies me as a genuine believer. (Eph. 2:19; Rom. 12:5)

2. It provides a spiritual family to support and encourage me in my walk with Christ. (Gal. 6:1-2; Heb. 10:24-25)

3. It gives me a place to discover and use my gifts in ministry. (1 Cor. 12:4-27)

4. It places me under the spiritual protection of godly leaders. (Heb. 13:17; Acts 20:28-29)

5. It gives me the accountability I need to grow. (Eph. 5:21)

What are the requirements for connecting in membership with South Union?

There are four requirements: 1) profession of faith in Christ as Savior (i.e., connected to God through a personal relationship with Jesus); 2) declaration of faith through baptism (immersion in water), 3) agreement to follow the provisions of Church Consitution & Bylaws, and 4) connection to church body through covenant to a mutual relationship between member and church.

What are the procedures for joining the membership of South Union?

There are three ways that you may publicly align yourself with the membership of South Union.

1. Profession of Faith and Baptism

You may join by publicly confessing your faith in Christ as Savior and declaring that faith through water baptism under the authority of South Union Baptist Church.

2. Promise of Letter

As a member of another Baptist church of like faith and order, should God lead you here, we will be happy to welcome you into our church family on promise of a letter of recommendation from the church of your current membership.

3. Statement of Faith and Baptism

In the event your church membership records are not available for a transfer from another Baptist church, or if you were once a member of a Baptist church of like faith and order, you may join upon your statement of salvation and scriptural baptism.

Is baptism required for church membership?

Baptism is not a matter of personal preference; it is a scriptural command. Therefore, we believe the proper practice of baptism is important in the life of every member of our church.

At South Union, we require those who have not been baptized by immersion or come from a church background that does not share our view of the purpose and practice of baptism to be baptized.

Our goal is not to question a person’s salvation experience or diminish his or her Christian heritage but to unite our membership in belief and practice. Obedience to Christ and His Word is the starting point for growth and fellowship together.
